The new Ambassador line of pencils has arrived, and I’m among the first to experience it in the Pyramid edition. Pencils fascinate me just as much as pens—even if I use them less often, they remain an inseparable part of my life. I’d like to share my impressions and feelings about this new pencil with you, and tell you who I believe it’s truly made for.
Unboxing and First Impressions
The pencil arrived in Yard-O-Led’s signature presentation, complete with the classic deep-blue box accented by the striking orange leather pull tab—a detail that always feels special. Inside, I found spare leads, the mechanical pencil safely wrapped in its protective sleeve, and a silver-polishing cloth. I didn’t spend long admiring it through the packaging—its beauty was evident even through the textured plastic. The moment I held it in my hand, I caught myself whispering wow. The overall impression was instantly impressive. Both the weight and the shape of the pencil genuinely surprised me.
The weight is substantial, and I welcome it. To me, a luxurious writing instrument should feel solid—especially one crafted from silver. For those who prefer a lighter tool, the Standard model might be a better fit, but for enthusiasts like me, the extra heft only enhances the experience. That said, it’s not overwhelming; you won’t tire after an hour of sketching or writing. Personally, I wouldn’t mind if it were even heavier.
The shape is equally striking, with its pronounced taper at the grip section. This design choice provides excellent ergonomics, making it comfortable to hold whether for writing or sketching. It sits naturally in the hand, and its size feels just right. Although only slightly larger than the Lucky Pencil, it somehow gives the impression of being significantly more substantial—especially when used for quick sketches.

Elegance and Brilliance
When I unwrapped this pencil, I was immediately struck by its brilliance—the shine, the intricate pattern, and the flawless craftsmanship. At first glance, it almost didn’t seem like a piece of artisanal work, but rather a perfectly polished luxury product. My second wow came when I realized this level of refinement was achieved entirely by hand.
This is my fourth Yard-O-Led piece, and I must say it feels like the most elegant and luxurious of them all. So much so that even the strongest skeptic of traditional craftsmanship would have to admire it—if such skeptics even exist.
The design of the pencil is sleek, refined, and full of character, while still retaining the brand’s traditional nose cone. I find myself genuinely moved by the beauty of this mechanical pencil. At this moment, if I had to choose just one mechanical pencil to keep, it would be this one.
The Extending Mechanism and Functionality
The mechanism, which I first encountered in the Lucky Pencil, is also present here—a long extendable lead sleeve into which the lead slides. If I had to point out a single drawback of this pencil, it would be that the mechanism extends a bit too easily when gripping the end of the pencil. Personally, I would have welcomed a stronger resistance here, though I’m not sure how that would be possible given that the mechanism also rotates.
To advance the lead, you twist the end of the mechanism, and the lead gradually extends. What I love about this is the level of control: unlike the typical push-button systems most mechanical pencils use, this one lets you extend the lead with absolute precision—millimeter by millimeter—exactly the way you prefer it.
For those curious about the inner workings, the entire mechanism can be unscrewed and removed. Inside, you’ll find cleverly hidden spare leads stored away, ready whenever you need them. This small but thoughtful detail is something I truly appreciate—having a refill always at hand adds a lot of practical value to such a refined writing instrument.

Sustainability of the Product
I cannot overlook this aspect. Of course, there are many luxury brands and many high-quality mechanical pencils, but when I look at it through the lens of sustainability, this one stands out. The use of a solid silver body and a virtually unbreakable mechanism suggests that these pencils are built to last for centuries. I would love to see one of the very first Yard O Led mechanical pencils—or even just a truly old piece—because I’m convinced it would still work flawlessly and look astonishing. If I ever come across one at an antiques market, I wouldn’t hesitate to take it home.
Why Yard O Led?
Yard O Led mechanical pencils are widely regarded as some of the best in the world, combining traditional craftsmanship with timeless design. Each piece is handcrafted in England from solid silver, following techniques that have been passed down for generations. What makes them unique is not only their durability and elegant aesthetic, but also the fact that every pencil is individually hallmarked – a guarantee of authenticity and quality.
The history of Yard O Led dates back to 1822, when Sampson Mordan patented the first ever propelling pencil in London. Building on this innovation, Yard O Led was officially founded in 1934, taking its name from the unique feature that each pencil contained twelve three-inch leads – in total, a full yard of lead. Today, the brand continues to honor its heritage.
Overall Impression
When it comes to mechanical pencils, this is, without exaggeration, my number one choice. If I were looking for a traditional wooden pencil, I would go for the Perfect Pencil from Graf von Faber-Castell, but in the world of mechanical pencils, this one stands above the rest for me.
The pencil is exceptionally elegant and highly representative—pleasing to the eye while its weight delights the soul. It is a true piece of hallmarked silver that elevates the entire experience of writing or sketching, creating an atmosphere of timeless craftsmanship.
