The Namiki AYA Hayate Gale is one of the two pens that mark my first step into the world of maki-e. Silver currents sweep across its deep black urushi surface like a powerful wind made visible, giving the pen a sense of movement and a personal meaning tied to change, freedom and forward momentum.

ABOUT THE PEN:

Some maki-e pens tell their story through figures, landscapes or mythology. The Namiki AYA Hayate Gale gives form to something we can feel but never hold: the wind. Hayate describes a powerful gale, and the silver currents crossing the black surface seem to twist, gather strength and move continuously around the pen. The image is abstract, yet it feels alive.

The ebonite body is finished in deep black urushi and decorated by the Kokkokai artisans using togidashi maki-e. Silver powders applied in changing intensities create the impression of wind passing through darkness, while the polished lacquer adds depth and a quiet glow. The name AYA evokes colour, lustre, shine and pattern—an ideal name for a collection that turns natural forces into visual poetry.

Acquired on the same day as my Hotei-son, this is one of the first two maki-e fountain pens in my collection and marks my first real step into this extraordinary Japanese art form. Its meaning is deeply personal to me. Wind is invisible, but its effect can transform everything it touches; for me, Hayate represents change, freedom and the courage to keep moving forward. The depiction is magnificent, but the idea behind it is what gives the pen its lasting importance.

The writing experience is built around Namiki’s oversized No. 30 two-tone 18-karat gold nib in FM, engraved with Mount Fuji. Its generous scale gives the pen presence, while the Fine Medium point keeps the line controlled and versatile. This balance between expressive art and purposeful writing is exactly what makes Hayate more than an object to admire.
