he Pilot Custom 743 is one of those pens that quietly proves how balanced and refined Japanese penmaking can be. At first glance, it looks understated — classic black resin, gold trim, nothing overly flashy. But once you start writing with it, the Posting (PO) nib reveals its true character.
This nib was originally designed for writing on thin paper, producing an exceptionally fine, controlled, and precise line. It’s slightly bent downward, which creates a unique writing feel — firm, yet unbelievably smooth. It has that special kind of feedback that reminds you of the paper’s texture without ever feeling scratchy.
What I love most about the PO nib is how consistent and reliable it is. Whether you write fast notes or slow, deliberate lines, the ink flow remains steady and predictable. It’s the kind of nib that makes you trust it completely — a true workhorse in a world full of showpieces.
The Custom 743 is often overshadowed by its bigger sibling, the Custom 823, but for me, it strikes the perfect balance: light, elegant, and endlessly enjoyable to use.
